A Blue-print to Reduce Use of
Anti-psychotic Medications
by Integrating
Quality of Life and Quality of Care
Syzygy - Quality of Life, QAPI, and the MDS

(Lunch included with all day session)

While quality of life and quality of care are often seen as separate and competing, the challenge to reduce use of anti-psychotic medications provides a perfect example of how quality of life and individualized care actually gets you better clinical results. CMS is emphasizing individualized care and environments as approaches to reduce and prevent residents' agitation. This day-long session provides a how-to for reducing anti-psychotic medications as a high-involvement performance improvement initiative. It guides participants in organizational practices for using the assessment tools of MDS 3.0 as a real tool for integration of quality of life and quality of care, through high staff involvement in the process, and meaningful use of assessment and care planning in every day practice. Learn how to tap into the human potential and bring out the best in your entire staff through this inclusive approach. Have everyone's contribution be important. Syzygy in astronomy means the alignment of three celestial bodies - learn how to align three CMS initiatives - quality of life, QAPI and MDS - to reduce medications by promoting each resident's individualized customary routines. Dr. Susan Wehry and a panel of practitioners will highlight non-pharmacologic interventions to know your residents and individualize their daily routines. A national quality improvement expert will help participants develop your own plans to reduce medication use in your organizations. This day will be educational, inspiring, and practical and you'll leave with a blue-print for action.

The Chrysalis Room

Symbolized in the quiet, still, miraculous chrysalis stage in which the caterpillar transforms into a butterfly.

Sacred spaces have common elements. They are protected and safe from danger. They are quiet, serene, comforting, contemplative places. They are spacious yet private. They are symbols of the human search for meaning in life. They invite people to be there. Emotions are evoked within them, encouraging personal transformation.

The Chrysalis Room™ provides these elements to the person making his or her transition and to the loved ones who desperately want to "be there with them;" as well as to the professional caregivers who serve them and to the home community sharing this holy passage. The Chrysalis Room allows everyone to bear witness to natural death in a safe place, and to participate in one of life's great miracles.

A supportive environment like this becomes a sanctuary for the reverent ritual of keeping vigil with the dying. It encourages meaning making, reconciliation, completion, healing, and peace for everyone involved.

Visit our Chrysalis Room and learn from founder Loretta Downs how to create sacred space for your residents

Pioneer Networking

There are many spots you will find to sit and catch up with an old friend or discuss possibilities with a colleague.

Sage Conversations
Sage (seyj) –noun 1. a profoundly wise person; a person famed for wisdom. 2. wise through reflection and experience

Think Tank Talks
Have you ever sat with another person who is on the road of culture change and had an in-depth discussion about one training idea, one challenge or even one word? This is what we will do except with a whole room of people. This is how it will work:
1. Each Think Tank Talk will have a set topic and a facilitator.
2. The facilitator will set the stage for the discussion.
3. We will discuss.
4. We will not want to end our discussion.
5. We will walk away with new insight, inspiration and fuel for our next discussion.

Come join us and come with an open mind.

Renewing Home: Student Design Competition
For the past 3 years SAGE and the American Institute of Architecture Students, (AIAS) have teamed to create an exciting national architecture student design competition.

The goals of this competition are to introduce into the architectural curriculum the language and concepts of culture change as they relate to the building, educate the next generation of architects to this new typology, challenge the architecture students to investigate new and innovative solutions in building design, change perceptions of what a nursing home can be, test the new building code design criteria, and promote the spread of more home like environments for elders living in residential homes.

This competition has grown exponentially and is quickly becoming the premiere national design competition offered each year by AIAS. Students from architecture schools across the nation and Puerto Rico have submitted designs to compete for cash prizes and national recognition.

Some of the winning designs from the first two years will be on display during the conference. Don't miss this opportunity to visit the AIAS/SAGE Student Design Competition display to see the very latest in cutting edge nursing home design.
