Creating Home in the Nursing Home III

MDS 3.0 as the Engine for Individualized Care and Quality Improvement

April 10, 2011
9 am-4:30 pm
Marriott Wardman Park
Washington, DC

You are invited to attend a National Learning Session for nursing home leaders, state stakeholders, and representatives of national networks and organizations.
It is a core component of the National Nursing Home Learning Collaborative. This session will provide "the 360 on MDS 3.0" -- a comprehensive approach to implementation of the MDS 3.0. We are very pleased to welcome keynote speaker, the new Director of the CMS Division of Nursing Homes, Alice Bonner, DPH, who will share her perspective and insights.

Participants will explore the workforce interventions and organizational practices needed to operationalize MDS 3.0 in a way that facilitates clinical improvement through individualized care. Focus will be on ways to foster staff engagement in the MDS 3.0 process and on the interdisciplinary and interdepartmental collaboration needed so that MDS 3.0 can be a tool for individualized care and services.

Throughout the day, the emphasis will be on how to put the MDS 3.0 to use in daily care, quality improvement, and organizational change. It will explore how to use MDS 3.0 as a pathway to individualized quality care. Better clinical results and more individualized daily life for residents contribute to increased resident, family and employee satisfaction. These are directly correlated with improvements in nursing home census and in staff stability. Representatives from the CMS MDS 3.0 Development Team will be on hand to present information about experiences from the first 6 months of MDS 3.0 and discuss CMS' plans for future QM development and public reporting.

Learning Objectives:
  • Explore the impact of quality of life factors on quality of care outcomes
  • Share organizational practices that utilize MDS 3.0 to facilitate clinical improvement through individualized care
  • Identify key processes for staff engagement in the MDS 3.0 and in subsequent interdisciplinary and interdepartmental collaboration to accommodate residents' customary routines.
  • Integrate MDS 3.0 and QI into daily practice among staff who work most closely with each resident.

In addition to this National Learning Session, the 2011 National Nursing Home Learning Collaborative on the MDS 3.0 will offer the following:
  • A Webinar-based Series of learning sessions on how to put in place the organizational changes necessary to implement MDS 3.0 to its fullest potential. These will be supported and supplemented activities in-state by LANES and state Culture Change Coalition.
  • A Four Part CMS Webcast Series featuring architects of MDS 3.0 explaining its origins, purpose, and design.
  • National Exchange: A National Gathering To Support State Collaborative Learning Networks, August, 2011. Participants will explore ways for their states LANES, Culture Change Coalitions and other networks to support providers in their states to use the MDS 3.0 as the basis for individualized high quality care.
  • Culture Change Strategies and Resources: Pioneer Network and The American Association of Nurse Assessment Coordination (AANAC) will collaborate with all the participating organizations and networks to provide links to resources for providers seeking help to implement changes in their organization's care delivery systems.
  • National Outcomes Congress and Accord, 2012 TBA. Participants will share results and lessons learned and shape state and national strategies for wide spread adaption of effective processes.
